The Gold Standard (VIBE a Steamy Romance Book 8) by Lynn Chantale

Pain can be pleasurable, but secrets never are.

Troy Curtis knows pain. He lives with it day in and day out. Only his daily workouts keep him sane. When he gets a new trainee at his gym, he wonders if his pain could be her pleasure.

Gold Falls needs to destress and one way of doing that is working out with a group of other VIPs. Sensing there is more to his bluster, she finds Troy’s gruff, trash-talking nature sexy and intriguing.

As their relationship heats up, a secret could tear them asunder.

Coming June 13th!

Chapter One

The sweet aroma of chocolate, cinnamon, and warm yeast greeted Troy as he rolled into PB & J Bakery. A bald black man, in a pale blue apron emblazoned with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the bib, offered a quick nod of acknowledgment as he slid several cherry- and  chocolate-topped cupcakes into a waiting box. Troy returned the greeting as he waited his turn.

He perused the glass cases full of cookies, cupcakes individual pies cakes, and other pastries as he waited.  By the time it was his turn, Troy had his choices narrowed down to a creme brulee and a couple of the chocolate croissants.

“Hey Troy.”

“Avery!” he greeted. “How’s it going?”

Avery Cheathams grinned. “Great if I could keep my wife out the kitchen,” he said loud enough for a red-haired and very pregnant woman to hear.

“Penelope, it’s Troy.”

Penelope placed a tray of chocolate and fruit tarts on the top of the case.

“Hi Troy.” She blew a wisp of hair from her face. “I miss coming to class.”

“Miss having you there.”

“You were only supposed to work on Geneva’s cake, not plate the desserts,” Avery admonished.

“Sweetheart, you’re shorthanded in the kitchen.” Opening the display case door, she hesitated and then traded an empty tray for the full one. “See. Easy-peasy.” Clutching the empty tray to her bulging middle, Penelope waddled back through the swinging double doors.

Avery shook his head. “The woman will be the death of me.”

“She looks great.”

“The important thing is she’s happy,” Avery told him.

A pang of longing filled Troy.

Excerpt

Lincoln drummed his fingers on the scarred wood table of the booth. Whatever Selena had to say, she would say it tonight. He lifted the tan ceramic mug of coffee to his lips and sipped the now lukewarm brew.

The bell above the diner door jangled, and Lincoln focused his attention on the newcomer. Average height, dark-brown skin almost the color of soot, and rust-colored hair. She could’ve been beautiful, but too much smoking and partying had hardened her features. The woman was thick and curvy, with full lips and brown eyes. In another time and place, desire would’ve flooded him. Now he felt nothing.

What he ever saw in Selena other than a piece of ass, he couldn’t say. He remembered what it was—he’d been lonely. Randa had been extremely hurt over learning he’d been unfaithful and her subsequent miscarriage. So that left Selena.

Selena was the live-in health aide who had assisted his wife after her surgery nearly six years ago. Since he couldn’t be the one to provide his wife comfort and companionship, he turned to Selena, who was more than happy to fill the void.

She offered him a tight smile as she approached. He didn’t return the gesture.

“What did you need to see me about?” he asked once she sat. The server approached, and he waved the waitress away.

“I don’t even get a hello?” Selena batted her lashes at him.

“Or a glass of water. Now what was so important you couldn’t tell me in a text?”

She huffed, slouched in her seat, and reached in her pants pocket and placed a crumpled piece of paper on the table. “I thought the news would be better in person.”

Lincoln scooted to the edge of the seat, ready to leave. He didn’t have time to play games with her, not after the wonderful afternoon he’d spent with his wife and the evening he still had planned.

“No. Wait. Please.” The desperation and plea held him more than her hand on his wrist. “I’m sorry. You still twist me all in knots, and I can’t have you.”

Lincoln sat. “No, you can’t.”

“Well, here’s a piece of news I know your wife will appreciate. I’m dying.” Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. “I swear, I’m telling the truth. I’ve the doctor’s report and everything.” She tapped the paper.

He stared at her, then the page beneath her finger. Surely he hadn’t heard her correctly, but there it was in black and white. Dying? Probably what bothered him most was that he felt nothing. This could be another one of her ploys to work her way back in his life. It wouldn’t be the first time. She’d tried something similar after she realized he wasn’t going to leave Randa for her. Selena went so far as to inject herself with medication that would mimic the symptoms of a chemo patient.

By then, he and Randa were working things out and had come to an agreement to open their marriage, Selena being the first. Her jealousies and undermining Randa’s confidence nearly toppled the tentative bond he and Randa had forged. Randa meant everything to him, and he wasn’t going to let another female destroy what they were building.

Lincoln was so stuck on the first part of Selena’s news he nearly missed the second, more important piece. He focused on her.

“Say that again.”

She sat back with a smug twist of her lips. “I said you have a daughter.”

Anger surged through him. There was no way in hell any of the words she had just spoken were true. He jumped from his seat, tossed some bills on the table, and then jerked her from the booth. Ignoring the stares of the other patrons, Lincoln marched Selena from the diner.

Once they hit the crisp air, heavy with rain, he shoved her against the rough exterior of the building. Eyes wide with fear, she stared up at him. He placed a hand at her throat.

“I’d kill you myself if I thought I could get away with it. Give me one reason why I shouldn’t walk away from you.”

“Because I wanted to hurt you the way you hurt me.” She held up a small envelope, the paper shaking so hard it rattled.

He snatched it from her and stepped away. He ripped it open and pulled out the birth certificate. His name was listed as the father. This still wasn’t enough proof. “And how do I know this is legit and not something you forged?”

She slid down the wall and sat on the asphalt. “You’re the only man I was involved with at that time.” She dropped her head in her hands. “I just need to know my kid will be taken care of after I’m gone.”

Shaking his head, he walked away.

“Please, Lincoln. I have to know.”

Chapter One

Click-click-click. The shutter did its thing from the camera with the long-range lens. The man with his eye to the viewfinder peered over the Nikon, before moving it back into position.

“Are you sure this is something you want to do?” he asked his companion, a sleek man with dark spiked hair, a trim mustache and goatee. He folded slim, soft hands; black ink adorned the knuckles as he set his hands in his lap.

“We have a score to settle,” he answered in a voice thick with some Eastern European accent. Maybe Russian? “They interfered with what was mine.”

“I don’t see how taking a bunch of photos at a gravesite is going to get us closer to them,” the photographer grumbled.

The photographer, one Cory Grant, studied the three people standing in a snow-covered cemetery. Two men and a very pregnant woman. Even from this distance he could see she was about to pop. Somehow the black parka she wore stretched to accommodate the belly. Her hair and her lower face were covered by a blue and black checked hat and scarf. The only spots of color on her. To her left a man with long dirt brown dreadlocks. He, too, was wearing a hat and scarf, but black to match the long wool dress coat. Even the leather gloves on his hands were black. To the woman’s right, another man his features were hidden by a dark fedora with a jaunty little feather at the crown. His coat was a charcoal gray, and the raised collar hid the bottom of his face. From this angle he couldn’t see the man’s hands, gloved or otherwise.

“Do you know who they are?” Cory glanced over his shoulder.

“They’re a bunch of fucking detectives!” he spat. “They walked into my shop pretending to be something else. He,” the sleek man stabbed a finger at the one with the dreads, “shut down my tattoo parlor. And I still have to pay child support.”

Cory pursed his lips. Having Matt—at least he thought that was the man with the dreads—close down Igor’s, his backseat companion, tattoo parlor wasn’t a huge loss. Igor was a terrible artist unless he was doing his own ink and then he was a veritable Picasso.

“Now how am I supposed to wash my money?” Igor demanded. “SShella was supposed to abort the little bastard. Instead, she has him and I’m supposed to take care of it? That lousy cocksucker Nick was to get rid of the kid. He botches that.

“I still don’t think taking on these detectives is wise. Especially Matt.”

Igor snatched Cory by the scruff of the neck and shoved his face in his. “I do not pay you to think. I pay you to act. They have suffered a loss. They,” he waved a hand to indicate the pregnant woman and Matt, “a baby anytime. They will be too distracted to pay me attention.”

Igor released Cory, allowing the man to fall into the footwell. Cory snatched up the camera, which had fallen, and anxiously checked it over.

He released an aggravated breath. The lens and the camera were fine. He glared at Igor. “I don’t give a fuck who you are. You break my camera and I’ll kick your ass.”

Igor laughed. “Is that what you’re upset about. A fucking camera?”

Cory ignored him and went back to staring at the trio.

“Who died?”
