Excerpt

If memory served her right, there was a patch of grass about twenty yards to her left. “Left,” she prompted the dog. At once, the animal did as commanded. After a few paces, they stopped. Amelia felt forward with her foot and discovered they were at a curb. “Good girl. Forward, I have it now.”

They crossed the expanse of asphalt without incident. Small pebbles crunched beneath her shoes before they were muffled by grass. She stopped, then removed the harness by pushing in the hinge clip. She pulled the apparatus off and looped it over her shoulder. She readied a poop bag just in case and gave the command, “busy, busy,” for the dog to relieve herself.

“All right, girl.” Amelia followed a few steps as Kiska sniffed and turned. A moment later, a soft hiss filled the night. Amelia shoved the unused bag in her pocket, then re-harnessed the dog. “All right, girl, let’s go back.”

Tires screeched in the distance. Amelia walked until her shoes touched the edge of grass and the beginning of asphalt. She listened for a moment. Still no traffic on this edge of the parking lot.

“Find the curb,” Amelia said. Kiska moved and Amelia stepped forward.

An engine raced. Someone screamed a warning as Kiska stopped, then dragged her backward.

Amelia lost her balance, trying to compensate for the sudden change in direction. Air sped past her, and something clipped her hip, aiding her fall. She hit the ground hard, sprawled into a heap.

Kiska danced next to her, nudging her face, emitting a soft whine.

Footsteps pounded on the pavement. She reached a shaky hand to calm her dog.

“It’s okay, girl. You did good. You saved my life.” She hugged the dog and allowed the animal to lick her face.

“Are you alright?” Voices moved around her. “That car tried to run you over.”

Excerpt Chapter One

A small throng of people gathered in the wide tiled foyer. The distant chatter of conversation mingled with the soft music and the occasional burst of laughter.

Mr. VIP eyed the small group of people with some hostility. Look at them. So successful and happy at this New Year’s Eve gathering. How dare they be happy when I am struggling. He clenched his hands at the thought.

Didn’t they know his world was falling apart? Didn’t they know he was suffering? Or were they too wrapped up in their own relationships and businesses to notice he had withdrawn more than usual?

They were supposed to be his friends, his colleagues, his support system.

And not one of them noticed.

No. Not when he had stopped bringing his wife around. Nor when he no longer hosted any social gatherings at his home. They hadn’t even noticed he no longer discussed his business, his passion.

They hadn’t noticed anything.

Breathing deep, allowing the rising anger to swell and dissipate enough, he unclenched his hands and exhaled. Once more, he was the calm collected man they all knew him to be.

“Has the rest of our group arrived?” said Abigail Anderson. She held the handle of a large attentive but aging yellow, English Labrador retriever named Percy.

“I think we’re still waiting on Penelope.”

“Let me grab a quick picture before we move,” Geneva Martin said. She walked a few steps away, her heels clicking on the polished floor. “I can’t believe I’m getting a chance to be here,” Geneva gushed. “My mom always described the lobby as classy. You know, lots of marble and crystal chandeliers.” Her words were punctuated with a feminine voice as she rapidly instructed the person with the camera to tilt the cameral left, then right. Then the soft click of a shutter snapping followed, echoing off the high ceilings. “I can’t wait to post these on my website.”

A smile curved her lips. a rocking good party was in full swing, and she couldn’t wait to participate. The wall in front of her slid open and sound slammed into her.

For a moment she was deafened by music, voices, and heat. She almost stepped back with the onslaught, but squared her shoulders and shoved through the thick soup of gyrating bodies, techno music and humidity.

A few heads swiveled her way, smiling or winking appreciation. Smiling, she added an extra hip sway. She loved this dress. She spent the better part of three months, brown bagging her lunch and extra hours in the gym just to make sure she was toned and curved for this dress.

By the time she reached the long sleek bar, the slinky, silk chemise was near transparent with perspiration and clung to her ample curves.

“Pink moscato,” she ordered when she caught the bartender’s attention.

While she waited for her drink she turned and scanned the crowd. Odd. She figured Sir would already be here. If he was here, he wouldn’t be hard to find. He was an easy six-two and built like a linebacker. And he would easily stand out amongst the slender, pretty, and less built patrons.

“Here ya go.”

Turning, she found her drink waiting. She picked it up and stopped. Something was written on the napkin She set the glass aside to read.

“Open the package and put it on.’

Essence dragged the package from her purse and ripped off the brown paper. Inside was a simple blindfold. Her heart skipped a beat. She was supposed to wear a blindfold in a sex club with a bunch of strangers.

She worked a little spit around her mouth thought better of it and took a fortifying gulp of wine. This was probably her punishment for being late. Well, it was her own fault. Had she not indulged in the extra twenty minutes of hydromassage after her workout, changed into the dress she was now wearing, and hit traffic, she’d have been here on time.

She slid the blindfold in place. Who was she kidding? Had she not changed at the gym, she’d be in even more trouble. It wasn’t like she went around in silk without underwear. Sipping her wine, she listened to the ebb and flow of the club. This was the main floor, well the party floor where all the bars, music and dance floors were centered.

A hand brushed her behind and she stiffened. Slowly she relaxed. Just someone walking by and got a little too close, she reasoned.

A flush of heat bloomed through her body. The sweetness of the wine helped settle any lingering nerves.

A hard body pressed into hers. “Are you here with anyone?” came the rich baritone.

“I am.”

He leaned close so his lips brushed her ear. A small shiver of awareness danced through her veins. “Maybe I see you with your man and he let me have a taste?”

Before she could respond, he was gone. She was so tempted to tear off the blindfold and see who he was.

Maybe she drank the wine a little too fast, but she definitely had a slight buzz from the alcohol. Glass now empty, she set it aside and leaned against the counter more for support than leisure.

A familiar scent, a deep woodsy pine whispered pass. She turned to get a better sniff and was grabbed around the waist. She opened her mouth to protest, and a hand was clamped over her lips.
