"This will never work,” Victor Grimaldi said.

He stared at the red-haired woman standing at the grave site. Guilt gnawed at his insides as he watched her lower her head. Her hair fell forward, veiling her tears from his scrutiny. Is this really worth it? How could he look Amelia in the eye after this? After all, she was his friend.

Victor looked away unable to witness her grief any longer. “She doesn’t deserve this,” he murmured. “It’s not too late to find a better way.”

“A better way!” his companion scoffed. “And you deserve to be left alone? Surely, there’s a better way to be included in their family.” His companion stepped closer, the voice a little more cajoling than before. “Look at them. All sharing in her grief. A family mourning the loss of a respected if despised family member.”

Victor shook his head, not wanting to hear the words, yet knowing there was a thread of truth in them. He swallowed hard.

“He’s grieving as much as she is, and you can’t even comfort him,” his companion said with disdain. “Look at them. All the family is there, and where are you?”

Victor once again fastened his gaze on the gravesite and the couple standing there. He could just make out the corner of the American flag peeking from beneath her left arm. Her back was ramrod straight despite her thin shoulders quavering up and down. His heart thudded a little faster when he caught sight of Gage Bedford, a gangly, somewhat awkward youth standing beside the woman.

He towered over her smaller frame. Even at this distance, the youth’s stance spoke of comfort and shared sadness. He watched the teen’s lips move. She acknowledged the words with a faint nod before he walked away and left her alone again. A faint drizzle misted the air while thunder rumbled in the background.

“At a distance, watching.”

The soft words jerked him back to reality. “He doesn’t deserve this either,” Victor muttered.

“And you do?” the companion demanded. “Quit your whining. She’s never gonna know the difference.”

Victor swung his gaze back to his companion. “But I know the difference!” He drew a stuttered breath. “She’s going to find out.” He dragged nervous fingers through his short, cropped hair. Gareth Bedford, a well-built black man and his lover, stepped close to the woman and leaned in. As the man wrapped an arm around her shoulders, a stab of jealousy sliced through his gut. Victor had no right to feel that callous emotion, since he was the source of her pain. Yet…it persisted.

“It’s very simple, Victor.” The speaker lifted sunglasses and glared through brown eyes. “She’s blind; she’s grieving. By the time she discovers what happened, things will have progressed too far for her to prevent anything. And if she does find out,” Long, thin fingers flicked lint from Victor’s shoulder, a cold smile creasing equally thin lips, making Victor flinch, “I will know exactly who to blame. Understand? She’ll marry Gareth Bedford in three or four months, and no one will be the wiser. And no one will know your secret either.”

Slowly, Victor nodded. He glanced back at the man and the grieving woman, just as she crumpled to the ground. The man lifted her in his arms and cradled her close. The gangly teen hurried forward. The man shook his head, then nodded toward a line of cars. The youth took off in that direction.

A fresh surge of guilt swamped Victor. There was no way he could keep this from them, but the next words chilled his blood.

“Of course.” They watched the couple as well; Gareth was carrying Amelia to a waiting limo. “If she ever learns the truth, before the culmination of my plans, you will know what it’s like to grieve for your lover.” Returning glasses to face the speaker spun on snazzy heels. “And her death will be on your conscience too.”

Excerpt Chapter One

A small throng of people gathered in the wide tiled foyer. The distant chatter of conversation mingled with the soft music and the occasional burst of laughter.

Mr. VIP eyed the small group of people with some hostility. Look at them. So successful and happy at this New Year’s Eve gathering. How dare they be happy when I am struggling. He clenched his hands at the thought.

Didn’t they know his world was falling apart? Didn’t they know he was suffering? Or were they too wrapped up in their own relationships and businesses to notice he had withdrawn more than usual?

They were supposed to be his friends, his colleagues, his support system.

And not one of them noticed.

No. Not when he had stopped bringing his wife around. Nor when he no longer hosted any social gatherings at his home. They hadn’t even noticed he no longer discussed his business, his passion.

They hadn’t noticed anything.

Breathing deep, allowing the rising anger to swell and dissipate enough, he unclenched his hands and exhaled. Once more, he was the calm collected man they all knew him to be.

“Has the rest of our group arrived?” said Abigail Anderson. She held the handle of a large attentive but aging yellow, English Labrador retriever named Percy.

“I think we’re still waiting on Penelope.”

“Let me grab a quick picture before we move,” Geneva Martin said. She walked a few steps away, her heels clicking on the polished floor. “I can’t believe I’m getting a chance to be here,” Geneva gushed. “My mom always described the lobby as classy. You know, lots of marble and crystal chandeliers.” Her words were punctuated with a feminine voice as she rapidly instructed the person with the camera to tilt the cameral left, then right. Then the soft click of a shutter snapping followed, echoing off the high ceilings. “I can’t wait to post these on my website.”

Santa Claus?” He rubbed his eyes. Be serious.”

I am.” She offered the latest note, shuddering as she swept a wary eye over the bold, slashing letters, wet and weeping across the page. He says hell see me tomorrow. Thats Christmas Eve.”

Jake plucked the paper from her fingers. Have you told anyone else?”

Just you.”

Why didnt you say something earlier? I heard a similar report on the news. Maybe you should go to the police.”

She suppressed a groan. A faceless, nameless, dude dressed up like the jolly old elf was leaving sinister messages on her windshield, and the best Jake had to offer was call the police”? Didnt he think shed done that? All she got for her trouble was a complaint number and a thank you. Who could blame the authorities when they had more crime than cops?

She combed trembling fingers through her hair. Shed rather leave the police out of the equation, but maybe if she showed them the letters they would take her seriously this time. Either way she wanted the harassment to stop.

She sighed. Wha-what did you hear on the news?”

Theyre called Santa Muggings.Several individuals have been robbed by Santa, mostly at the mall though. The police cant really help without a better description.”

Did they receive threats, too? Did you read that note, Jake? This guy is very specific.” Apprehension flickered through her stomach, twisting her in knots. She paced the small office. What am I gonna do? Do you know how many Santas are running around this time of year?”

He grinned. Can you imagine how this has hurt sales at the mall?”

She tossed him a frosty glance. Youre making jokes, and Im serious.”

Jake captured her hand. His warm, rough palm calmed her agitated nerves. She met his stare, and surprised delight flickered under his concern. Had he also noticed the tiny jolt arcing between them?

She rested her gaze on his lean, boyish features. His smooth toffee skin held a smattering of day-old stubble and seemed to be the only thing she could think of some days. Well, that and his mouth. She longed to lean across the desk, to taste his full, sexy lips and never stop. She blinked. Now was not the time.

Im here for you, honey.” He drew lazy circles on the back of her hand with his thumb.

She loved the contrast of their skin tones, his a rich caramel and hers a warm chocolate. Butterflies whispered through her veins until Sara had a hard time concentrating on anything but him. I think these notes may have something to do with your grandfathers death.”

Why do you say that?”

With reluctance, she withdrew her hand. Every year Jerry would open twelve of the deposit boxes downstairs. If he found something valuable, he would split the contents with the rest of the staff, as kind of a year-end bonus.”
