Xochiti shimmered into view as the last of the students left.

Selma stared at him, crossing her arms over her breasts. “What are you doing here?”

He quirked an eyebrow. “Listening to your lecture.”

With a huff, she picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. “You’ll have to wait until next semester. My roster is full and I’m not signing any overload forms.”

As she spoke, a subtle glow of light enveloped her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she demanded.

“You are glowing?”

“Right,” she scoffed. “I don’t have time for your games, Xochiti. I have papers to grade.” She brushed past him.

“We need to talk, Selma.”

“Make an appointment.”

“Dove,” the endearment was spoken with quiet command. She stiffened, slowly turned to face him. “Be ready for me tonight.”

Desire flared in her irises, and she bowed her head. Still the shimmering white light around her intensified.

Curious—was she angry because he’d aroused her or angry because he was here?

“You can have my body and my submission, Xochiti, but you will not have my heart.” With that she spun on her heel and slammed from the room.

He lowered his head. He wanted all of her.

Pride (Sin-Eaters Book 1) #MFRWhooks

Huemac, a half-breed, covets ultimate power, but he needs two things—access to the royal family and an ancient artifact. He attains the former by seducing the Emperor’s sister, and then steals the latter.

Moctezuma, the newly crowned Emperor, comes from a long line of powerful gods known as Sin-Eaters. He desires peace among his people, but an ancient prophecy warns of war.

Huemac discovers the incantation to activate the fabled Athame of Souls, a mythical weapon capable of entrapping souls. His quest to rule is within his grasp. Only one thing stands in his way—Moctezuma.

“I understand that my sister has requested you as part of her personal guard,” Moctezuma began offhandedly. “This is a much-coveted position.”

Huemac pretended not to see the dark glare Metztli shot Moctezuma. “Indeed, Lord Emperor. It is a testament of the trust and faith the princess has in me.” He allowed pride and arrogance to flow through his voice.

Moctezuma merely smiled. “Please do not stand on formality, old friend. I am rather pleased Metztli has requested you.”

Huemac coughed in surprise. He made the mistake of glancing directly into Moctezuma’s eyes and once more experienced the sensation of falling. With great effort he looked away. Had the emperor seen anything?

Moctezuma frowned, then rubbed his temples. “I will be speaking with Tialoc about the reassignment once he returns.”

Hope that had nothing to do with his own plot soared through Huemac. Once more he wondered if he were merely using Metztli as a means to an end of if he truly had feelings for her. “And when will that be?”

Moctezuma stared at a point beyond Metztli’s shoulder. “Three days’ time. In the meantime I have spoken with Xochiti to lighten your duties so that the two of you may be permitted some time here and there.”

Joy burst through Huemac. He shook himself. What was the matter with him? He was behaving like some lovestruck halfling.

“Oh that is marvelous!” Metztli beamed. “We can picnic in the valley of the Emperors. You have promised to show me the tombs of the Fallen.”

Huemac inclined his head, unable to stop the smile of indulgence from curling his lips. “Indeed I did. As soon as I know when I can leave, we will begin our adventure.” And maybe I’ll find the incantation to free my soul.

The children exchanged anxious glances as they looked around the foyer. Xochiti couldn’t blame them—he felt the solid pull as well. Selma was nearby. They walked farther in the house. Loud pounding on the door had Julia emitting a small shriek.

Gage turned toward the door and huffed.

“What is it?”

“Andre.”

“Fine. You two take care of that and I will see if your mother is in her room.”

They nodded and Xochiti continued down the hall, checking each room as he went. Nothing had been disturbed in the dining room or the kitchen.

“Where have you two been?” came the demand from a tenor male voice.

Xochiti listened a moment, to be sure the twins were okay.

“We were out with our mother,” this was from Julia.

“What do you want?” Even to Xochiti’s ears, Gage sounded gruff and condescending.

“Boy, you’ll show me some respect.”

“Like you did our mother?”

Silence.

“What do you want?”

“My wedding is tomorrow. I want the both of you standing at my side.”

Xochiti paused in descending the stairs. A wedding wouldn’t be good news. And someone still had to tell Andre that Julia and Gage were not his. He continued down the stairs and crossed the threshold into Selma’s room.

Relief washed through him, making his limbs weak and rubbery. On the bed was his mate. He approached, and she stirred, lifted her head. She focused on him. A faint smile touched her lips before it fell and a scowl replaced it. He hesitated.

“Selma?”

She came to her knees and extended her hand. A ball of fire launched toward him. He caught it in his palm and closed his fingers around it.

“How could you?” Anguish and betrayal filled her voice.

Xochiti held out his hands palms up and took a cautious step forward. “What did I do?”
