Weeping, the kind which does its best to go unnoticed, filled the ominous silence. The constant whimper invaded the consciousness of the woman sprawled half on half off the bed. With effort the woman forced her heavy lids open and blinked in the frail darkness. She shifted, then toppled to the hard packed earth with a grunt.

Gripping her pounding head, she sat cross legged on the floor and rested her back against the wall. She rolled spit around her mouth in an effort to loosen her swollen tongue from the roof of her mouth.  What the heck happened?

“Sean?” she croaked. Her voice was low and rusty from disuse. Had she passed out? They, she and her fiancé Sean, hadn’t even had that much to drink.

“No Sean here,” came a shaky singsong voice.

Had she passed out somewhere else? She shifted, moaning when her stomach shifted and slid like old grease on water. “This isn’t funny, Sean.” Finally she looked upward.

Not home. No where near home.

Weak sunlight filtered through the dingy mullioned glass block windows. From somewhere, a woman wept as if trying to do it in secret. The dirt floor was hard, and sported a colorful rug, a camped with a stingy mattress and rolled sleeping bag sat in one corner. While a toilet and shower, well more like a hose with a nozzle occupied the other corner. At least that section of the room had an actual floor. The faint stench of sewage gave her an idea of what was supposed to go on there.

Definitely not at home.

Rough gray cinder blocks formed the walls and thick wood and bars made up the front of the cell. A soft, soothing alto sang an old Cyndi Lauper song, something about girls having fun.

She was not having fun. She wanted to go home. She didn’t want to be in this dirty, filthy, hovel waiting for God knew what or even worse for whoever had grabbed her to come back and  and do what? Her heart pounded at the question.

She grasped his hand and pressed it to her face. He closed his eyes and savored the smoothness of her cheek on his rough and calloused palm. Too long. That small gesture, so comforting and yet so elusive, set his pulse racing. He had been away extensively, not just chasing down bail jumpers, also attending seminars and trainings. Lincoln still had a few more seminars to attend over the next couple of months, and all he wanted to do was spend the time with her.

His only consolation was that neither of them would be alone, but there was nothing like spending time with his wife.

“I’ve missed our time together,” she said, rubbing her cheek against his hand.

“Me too. Even though I know Matteo is here, I miss being with you.”

Matteo, who was tracking a fugitive, helped alleviate the burden of loneliness when Lincoln was out of town.

“He isn’t you.” Sincerity rang in her words.

“It warms me to hear you say that.” Lincoln released Randa to uncork the bottle of wine and poured two glasses.

“It’s the absolute truth. I like Matteo a lot, but he can’t replace you.”

“You sweet talker.” He handed her a goblet of the pale golden liquid and settled next to her on the sofa.

He brushed a strand of hair from her forehead. “It’s been way too long since the two of us have just had some time together.”

She sipped her wine and studied him above the rim.

“One of these trips, you should come with me.”

“That sounds wonderful. Are you sure I wouldn’t be a distraction?”

“A welcome distraction.” He leaned forward and touched her lips with his. Just a hint of a kiss, but it was enough to ignite his desire. “I miss you being by my side when I go out of town.” He combed his fingers through her hair before twisting a kinky coil around one digit. “Do you think we can do that again?”

“I don’t see why not. I enjoy traveling with you. Helping you demonstrate self-defense techniques is a thrill.”

He grimaced. “You were always a little too enthusiastic about helping in that area. Almost makes me wish I hadn’t taught you anything.”

“Ten thousand dollars?” Moses Hawke dragged his fingers through his shoulder length hair. He resisted the urge to hurl his cellphone. This was not the news he wanted to hear from his accountant. “Explain to me how someone walks into the bank and leaves with ten grand. Of my money?”

“Well, I’m working on it.”

“I don’t want you working on it. I want it handled. There’s paperwork involved when you take out or deposit that amount of cash. I want to know who took my money. Those funds were earmarked for Saturday’s Back to the Bricks’ Slamfest. I want it back.”

“All right, Moses. I’ll wake the bank manager if I have to.”

“You’ll wake the bank president, Julius. I do a lot of business with that bank and they manage a great deal of my funds. If they can’t find who did this then tell them there are other financial institutions just begging for my business. Got that?”

Heavy breathing and faint scratching sounded through the line.

“And Julius?”

“Yes?”

“You can be replaced.” Moses pressed “End” and tossed his phone on his desk. Just what he needed, more drama. First Virgil decides to attack his tag team’s woman and now this. Speaking of which, he needed to make sure the check was ready when that heel decided to drag his sorry ass in to get his money.

He raked his fingers through his already disheveled hair and huffed. What else could go wrong? Light taps rattled the frosted glass on the office door. About time. He bent over the desk to retrieve the folder containing the check and contract for Virgil.

“C’min,” Moses called.

The knob jangled and the hinges creaked. Perfume, a subtle blend of rose and citrus caressed his senses, tightened his groan and knotted his stomach. Definitely not Virgil. High heels clicked across the threshold, followed by the soft rustle of clothing.

No. This could not be happening to him tonight. She wasn’t supposed to be here. He closed his eyes and willed his body under control, but the sweet scent of her fragrance left him a little dizzy.
