Prologue

“You think Nat is doing all right?”

“Of course she is,” he responded even though he couldn’t stop the note of doubt from creeping in. “She has the number to reach us. And our GPS coordinates if she has to send a ranger out to us.”

“She seemed way too happy to be rid of us.”

Carson covered Matt’s hand. “I worry about her too, but she’s very good at letting us know what she’s feeling.”

“You’re very good at gauging her state of mind.”

Carson inclined his head. “Yes, and we were getting on her nerves.”

Dimples flashed on either side of the quick grin. “Do you ever think she’ll just stop needing us?”

“How so?”

Matt pocketed the empty wrappers and gazed out over the water. “To protect her, make sure she’s happy to, you know, take care of her. Or maybe she wants to date someone else”

“Has she said anything about wanting to date other men?”

Matt shook his head.

“Has she said she doesn’t need or want us around?”

“Other than you two better go on this camping trip or you’re really gonna make me angry?” he countered with a wry grin.

“Other than that.”

“No. She just seems a little,” Matt struggled with finding the right word, “off.”

“What do you expect? She was abducted and nearly raped again by her first attacker. Not to mention the woman terrorized her for weeks leading up to the final assault. Your nephew was poisoned, and the boy’s sperm donor ghosts on us. Nathalie internalizes many of her feelings.

“You two have always been a little closer than she and I. Has she said something to indicate she wants to date or she’s not happy with the way either of the relationships are going?”

“She complains you’re an overprotective dominant man.”

“Then I’m doing my job.”

They lapsed into silence. Matt looked around, picked up a handful of stones and tossed them into the water.

“Does it bother you?” He offered the rocks to Carson.

“What?”

“That she and I are closer?”

“No. I’m glad she cares for you as much as I do. What she needs and wants from me is very different from what she needs and wants from you.”

“And what’s that?”
