Those lips curved into a siren’s smile and conjured steamy weekends in bed. He shoved the coffee in Miles’ general direction and ignored his friend’s chuckle.

“May I help you?”

Decadent perfection tilted her head to the side and the tantalizing silkiness of her hair cascaded over a bare shoulder. When he met her eyes, a brownish-green, he nearly stopped breathing. Her! Only one woman he knew had hazel eyes. Surely the temptress standing before him wasn’t his very own masseuse? God, he didn’t even recognize her, all dressed up and with places to go. He drifted his gaze from head to toe. Damn, baby girl should leave her work smock at home. And now he couldn’t remember her name.

“I’m sorry I know you’re busy, but we’re having a little trouble finding our bartender.” Her sultry voice reminded him of satin sheets and candlelight. If she wanted to haunt his fantasies, then he would definitely make them a reality. What did he have to do to get her in bed?

“I’m the bartender.”

She arched a perfectly shaped brow. “For the bachelorette party?” She glanced around. “You seem pretty busy right here.”

He grinned. “I’ll get the first round started and then I’ll be at your beck and call. I’m Street, by the way.”

She lowered her lashes before meeting his gaze. “I know, although I always preferred Rue. Have you been avoiding me?”

The children exchanged anxious glances as they looked around the foyer. Xochiti couldn’t blame them—he felt the solid pull as well. Selma was nearby. They walked farther in the house. Loud pounding on the door had Julia emitting a small shriek.

Gage turned toward the door and huffed.

“What is it?”

“Andre.”

“Fine. You two take care of that and I will see if your mother is in her room.”

They nodded and Xochiti continued down the hall, checking each room as he went. Nothing had been disturbed in the dining room or the kitchen.

“Where have you two been?” came the demand from a tenor male voice.

Xochiti listened a moment, to be sure the twins were okay.

“We were out with our mother,” this was from Julia.

“What do you want?” Even to Xochiti’s ears, Gage sounded gruff and condescending.

“Boy, you’ll show me some respect.”

“Like you did our mother?”

Silence.

“What do you want?”

“My wedding is tomorrow. I want the both of you standing at my side.”

Xochiti paused in descending the stairs. A wedding wouldn’t be good news. And someone still had to tell Andre that Julia and Gage were not his. He continued down the stairs and crossed the threshold into Selma’s room.

Relief washed through him, making his limbs weak and rubbery. On the bed was his mate. He approached, and she stirred, lifted her head. She focused on him. A faint smile touched her lips before it fell and a scowl replaced it. He hesitated.

“Selma?”

She came to her knees and extended her hand. A ball of fire launched toward him. He caught it in his palm and closed his fingers around it.

“How could you?” Anguish and betrayal filled her voice.

Xochiti held out his hands palms up and took a cautious step forward. “What did I do?”

He stepped forward. A sheaf of papers was crumpled in hand, the top page a little damp. He closed the distance between them, lifting her braid to wrap around his hand. He tilted her head back. Her eyes were closed, but moisture clung to the sooty fringe of her lashes.

Temper flared at the thought of anyone hurting her. “What has caused such pain, my dove?”

She shook her head.

He tightened his hand in her hair, her full lips parted on a gasp. “Do not lie to me.”

She opened her eyes then, her mist gray eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “Trying to let go of the pain,” she murmured. “Some days are better than others.”

He traced the fullness of her bottom lip. “You are better off without him.”

Selma met and held his gaze. “I know. I’ve always known that.”

Xochiti nodded. “Good.” He released her hair, stooped and retrieved the papers. Her grip tightened on the pages, he merely held on until she let go. He scanned the pages, her divorce decree. The odor of charred paper filled the air and he realized he allowed his emotions to get the best of him. He slid a hand along the edge, extinguishing the flames, then flung the stack to the far side of the room. They landed with a flutter against a nightstand. “This is your time. Just you and me, Selma dove. Stand.”

He stepped away. She wobbled as she stood and he grasped her waist to steady her. The top of her head came to the middle of his chest. He buried his nose in her hair as he drew her closer, her back resting against his front. She went still against him, waiting.

So willing. How could any man mortal or immortal not find her beauty intoxicating. It wasn’t just her outward appearance, voluptuous woman’s body, full breasts and sexy legs, but her spirit. So sweet with a hint of innocence. And if that wasn’t enough, she was intelligent.

The first time he met her was in her classroom for Ancient History. He was only passing through the halls of the college, but the soft lilt of her voice drew him in, captured his attention and held his soul hostage. He still remembered her lecture. Nahuti or Aztec religion. Her simple conviction that while the race had been a bit of a bloodthirsty one, they were more advanced than any other civilization.

In that moment he decided to share with her who he was.
