Sin Eaters: Pride #MFRWhooks

Huemac, a half-breed, covets ultimate power, but he needs two things—access to the royal family and an ancient artifact. He attains the former by seducing the Emperor’s sister, and then steals the latter.

Moctezuma, the newly crowned Emperor, comes from a long line of powerful gods known as Sin-Eaters. He desires peace among his people, but an ancient prophecy warns of war.

Huemac discovers the incantation to activate the fabled Athame of Souls, a mythical weapon capable of entrapping souls. His quest to rule is within his grasp. Only one thing stands in his way—Moctezuma.

“I understand that my sister has requested you as part of her personal guard,” Moctezuma began offhandedly. “This is a much-coveted position.”

Huemac pretended not to see the dark glare Metztli shot Moctezuma. “Indeed, Lord Emperor. It is a testament of the trust and faith the princess has in me.” He allowed pride and arrogance to flow through his voice.

Moctezuma merely smiled. “Please do not stand on formality, old friend. I am rather pleased Metztli has requested you.”

Huemac coughed in surprise. He made the mistake of glancing directly into Moctezuma’s eyes and once more experienced the sensation of falling. With great effort he looked away. Had the emperor seen anything?

Moctezuma frowned, then rubbed his temples. “I will be speaking with Tialoc about the reassignment once he returns.”

Hope that had nothing to do with his own plot soared through Huemac. Once more he wondered if he were merely using Metztli as a means to an end of if he truly had feelings for her. “And when will that be?”

Moctezuma stared at a point beyond Metztli’s shoulder. “Three days’ time. In the meantime I have spoken with Xochiti to lighten your duties so that the two of you may be permitted some time here and there.”

Joy burst through Huemac. He shook himself. What was the matter with him? He was behaving like some lovestruck halfling.

“Oh that is marvelous!” Metztli beamed. “We can picnic in the valley of the Emperors. You have promised to show me the tombs of the Fallen.”

Huemac inclined his head, unable to stop the smile of indulgence from curling his lips. “Indeed I did. As soon as I know when I can leave, we will begin our adventure.” And maybe I’ll find the incantation to free my soul.

Ring in the New #MFRWhooks

2020 is fast approaching, and the New Year can’t come fast enough to suit me! With the coming of a New Year comes resolutions. Some of the first resolutions to be made are weight loss.

Fitness centers, personal trainers, and the like have great offers to entice people to get in  shape, or lose a few pounds in time for the spring break. That’s fine and may last until March.

Then there’s the financial resolution. How else are you going to pay down that holiday debt?

How about a better relationship in the New Year?

Well, I can’t remember the last time I made a New Year’s resolution. However, if I were to make one or three. it would be to write more, socialize more, travel more, and do better health wise. I’d also like to minimize the amount of toxicity in my life, and live.

2020 brings a newness and a resolve to live. Not to have someone dictate who I can and can’t see or what I can and can’t do. If I want to visit family for six weeks, then someone please look after my cats.

My resolutions for 2020 are to get healthier, travel more, write more, and ditch the lingering bitterness and resentment I have. No one can do things for me, unfortunately. When I fall in love again, it will be with someone who truly respects and values what I bring to the table.

Now let’s see how many of those resolutions I can keep throughout the coming year.

Moctezuma narrowed his eyes and stood, his silver cape billowing behind him. He pushed a stray brown hair from his forehead and adjusted the long-feathered headdress on his head before placing his hand on the hilt of the dagger at his waist.

Tialoc shifted his stance. Xochiti and the rest followed suit. His men were loyal. They believed in free will as much as he did and would do all they could to thwart Emperor God’s scheme.

All he wanted to do was stave off the inevitable, but staring into Moctezuma’s eyes, Tialoc knew words were no longer effective. Something else drove Moctezuma to want to sacrifice the humans. The longer they stared at one another, the more apprehension knotted in Tialoc’s belly.

War was inevitable, but he had to try. To make one last attempt to get the obstinate leader to see reason, to rally whatever compassion the deity still contained.

“We do not take away their free will,” Tialoc argued.

“What’s the point of being a god if we can’t show those puny humans who is really in charge?”

Tialoc stepped forward, and Moctezuma’s guards shifted toward him. He tapped the hilt of his sword and his own men settled in position behind him. Tension stretched and strained. Just one word and Tialoc and his men would overrun the guards before the Emperor could shout for more.

“I will not allow you to destroy humanity for your perverse sense of pleasure. You have destroyed one civilization already. They worshipped you faithfully.”
Moctezuma sneered. “And you plan to stop me? You don’t have the power, let alone the backing.” He snapped his fingers and several men, in full battle armor, filled the room with swords and spheres drawn.
