A Perfect Getaway #MFRWhooks

Coming Soon!

A Perfect Getaway by Lynn Chantale

Hoping to rekindle the sizzle in their marriage, Harmony Evans plans a romantic getaway. A secluded cabin at Juniper Lake resort is the perfect place to seduce his wife and if he can get in a little ghost hunting, even better.

Jade is more than happy to spend the weekend getting reacquainted with Harmony, without the ghosts, but when their cabin appears haunted and the spectral inhabitants shoves their belongings to the door, she figures it’s time to leave.

No one told them Juniper Lake had a sordid past complete with a serial killer and its own host of earthbound spirits. When the other guests begin to die, the best they can hope for is to survive the night. With a sadistic killer on the loose and bodies piling up, romance will take a backseat to murder.

The hair at the nape of her neck lifted and Jade paused in chopping the stalk of celery for soup. She had the sensation of someone standing behind her. Breath, warm and a little wet, fluttered her hair.

Floorboards creaked and something brushed her shoulder. She gripped the knife handle tighter and whirled, brandishing the blade in front of her.

Nothing.

Her heart raced and she sucked in a breath to steady her rapid pulse. She scanned the room. Nothing was in the area that she could see, but she felt something.

She’d have dismissed her feelings as ridiculous if strange things didn’t keep happening. Like this morning, her bathrobe had been draped at the foot of her bed, but she found the garment hanging neatly in the closet along with her husband’s and he hadn’t placed it there.

Crash!

She jumped. Someone was in the cabin with her. Her hands shook.

“Harmony?” Maybe he was playing a little trick on her. He knew she didn’t care for his hobby of ghost hunting, which was one reason they were in this little cabin tucked in the woods. The other reason was so they could spend time together. And he was off fishing or chasing a rabbit in the forest, while she was being...haunted.

With knife in hand she checked every room of the cabin, which didn’t take long. The cabin had open architecture, the living room flowed into the dining room and kitchen so she could stand in the living room and look into both rooms. The bedroom door stood open and if she leaned just so she could see into the bathroom. Nothing.

So why did she get the impression that someone was watching her?

She peered out of the corner of her eye, hoping to catch a glimpse of what wasn’t there. A flash of light. She whipped her head to the left. Nothing.

Snap. Thud. Fingers swept down the side of her cheek while muted laughter wafted through the air.

“This isn’t funny,” she said to the empty room.

Metal scraped against metal. She hit the light switch, plunging the room in darkness. Jade fastened her gaze on the doorknob and clutched the butcher knife to her chest. She backed away, feeling for the wall with her free hand. If she had to, she could jump out the bathroom window.

A rumble of thunder rolled overhead. And that was another thing, their romantic weekend was turning into a soggy nightmare. She just wanted to go home and leave this place to its spectral inhabitants, if it was indeed haunted.

Wind shook the windows, rattling the glass in the panes. She tensed and bit back a shriek as her back brushed the wall. The fibers of the rough hewn walls grabbed at her shirt in an attempt to hold her in place. Damn Harmony and his quest to find the supernatural. Now would be the perfect time for him to be around to tell her there was no such thing as spooks.

Click clack.

Her heart thudded against her ribs so loud she feared it would jump from her chest. This wasn’t the romantic weekend her husband promised her and now he wasn’t even here. Cursing the day Harmony ever brought her to this hellhole, she flexed her fingers.

The door wobbled. She sucked in a breath. Hinges creaked. Her back hit the wall.

Sweat slicked her palms. A shadow fell across the threshold.

She raised the knife.

The capacity to love

Cassie's Birthday Wish by Lynn Chantale

Cassie loves Cole and cherishes her relationship with the sexy rancher, but her heart also yearns for, Seth, the ranch manager.

Cole has held Cassie’s heart for a very long time, and will do anything to keep her happy. But will a threesome with Seth be too much?

Excerpt

She shoved against his chest. “That is not a mouse.”

Seth squeezed by the couple and Cassie admired his naked torso. “In her defense, Cole, it’s a big, nasty rat.”

From her perch on the desk and behind Cole, Cassie peered above Cole’s head in time to see Seth bend to scoop the dead animal in a plastic bag. The gray and white tiger stripe Cassie kept as a pet, swiped at Seth’s gloved hand.

Seth took it all in stride, even battling with the cat a few moments over its prize. “Sorry Ripper, but you can’t keep bringing your treasures for our Cassie to praise you over. She’s squeamish about such things.”

With Cole’s help, Cassie hopped off the desk. Seth’s teasing pricked her feminine pride. “I’m not squeamish, I just don’t like dead rodents.”

Seth shoved the open bag toward her. The dying rat moved on its own volition. She squealed, then ducked under Cole’s arm to escape.

“It’s still alive!” she said with a shriek.

Cole grasped her wrist and pushed her behind him. “Barely, Cassie girl.”

“I can let Ripper finish him off, if you like?” Seth offered, with a husky laugh.

“C’mon Seth. You’ve had your fun,” Cole said.

“Take that filthy thing outta here. And wash your hands twice before you come back in.”

Seth laughed. “Honey, I’m wearing gloves.”

“Then burn them.”

His robust laughter floated through the office as he carried the rodent to the trash heap. The cat meowed its protest, then rubbed against Cassie’s legs. She untangled from Cole, intending to give the animal a consolation treat.

Cole retained his grip. She faced him, expectantly.

“Some days I wonder what you see in him,” Cole said.

Cassie shook her head. This wasn’t the first Cole said that. Sometimes it was tinged with jealousy other times, like now, it held a note of pure curiosity. “He brings me the same pleasure and fulfillment in life that you do.”

And that was the truth. She always had the capacity to love, and Cole was her first love, but the need was sated when Seth entered both of their lives. She couldn’t imagine living without either of them.

Excerpt

“Are you playing matchmaker again, Dylan?”

He chuckled. “No ma’am. He saw you sitting alone.”

“I think I can take it from here,” a smooth, velvety voice interrupted.

Dylan nodded and backed away. Elisabeth straightened a little in her chair. Her breath stuck in her throat at the intensity of the newcomer’s stare. His long slow perusal left her body simmering.

His jet black hair was cut close, the smooth hairline tapering to neatly trimmed sideburns. Otherwise, his rugged face was clean-shaven. He smiled and her eyes were drawn to his full, sexy mouth. For a moment, she wondered how his lips would feel pressed against hers. Desire flooded her veins.

“Jordan Carlisle.” He offered his hand. The oversized watch on his wrist winked in the dim light, vying for attention with his gold cufflinks.

She accepted his hand. “Elisabeth.” She snapped her gaze to his at the crackle of electricity between them. He held her hand a second too long and flirtation gleamed in the depths of his coffee-colored eyes.

“Mind if I join you?” He waved to the vacant chair across from hers.

She shook her head and bit back a sigh when his biceps flexed against the dark silk of his suit jacket. He unbuttoned his coat and sat down.

“I hate dining alone,” he said, smiling apologetically.

“I do too. I was just about to leave.” She studied him from beneath her lashes before meeting his eyes a second time. He seemed familiar to her, yet she couldn’t quite place where she’d seen him. “Have we met before?”

He smiled, wide and easy, and her heart fluttered in anticipation.

“Not formally. I’m a friend of your brother’s. We went to college together.”

His dark good looks and devil-may-care eyes slid into place in her memory. The photo in her brother’s room, of the lacrosse team. Jordan had been the captain.

“You and Drew played lacrosse.”

He nodded. “How is Andrew? It’s been a few months since we’ve seen each other.”

“Out of town at the moment. At a conference.” She reached for her water glass and Dylan reappeared with a second menu. “I’ll have to tell Andrew we spoke.”

“I’m sure he won’t mind.” Jordan smiled again and she melted.

She shook her head. “He thinks I should get out more, but my father has a way of sabotaging my love life.” She sipped her water.

He regarded her a moment, avid interest shining in his eyes. “You are definitely worth protecting.”

Heat crept into her cheeks from his scrutiny as well as the compliment. “You’re pretty suave, aren’t you?”

He chuckled, a smooth laugh that reminded her of warm fudge. “When it suits me.”

“Like now?”

He inclined his head.

“And my father knows nothing about you?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

She picked up a menu. “Let’s keep it that way.”
