Replaced? #MFRWhooks

Moses Hawke has loved Sin from the moment he laid eyes on her, but being with her cost him a good friend and valuable partnership.

Sin knows what Moses sacrificed to be with her and she’s willing to keep a few secrets of her own to maintain their peaceful existence.

Some things are not meant to be hidden and when all Sin’s transgressions become known, she’s left to wonder if Moses will still be there to protect her.

“Ten thousand dollars?” Moses Hawke dragged his fingers through his shoulder length hair. He resisted the urge to hurl his cellphone. This was not the news he wanted to hear from his accountant. “Explain to me how someone walks into the bank and leaves with ten grand. Of my money?”

“Well, I’m working on it.”

“I don’t want you working on it. I want it handled. There’s paperwork involved when you take out or deposit that amount of cash. I want to know who took my money. Those funds were earmarked for Saturday’s Back to the Bricks’ Slamfest. I want it back.”

“All right, Moses. I’ll wake the bank manager if I have to.”

“You’ll wake the bank president, Julius. I do a lot of business with that bank and they manage a great deal of my funds. If they can’t find who did this then tell them there are other financial institutions just begging for my business. Got that?”

Heavy breathing and faint scratching sounded through the line.

“And Julius?”

“Yes?”

“You can be replaced.” Moses pressed “End” and tossed his phone on his desk. Just what he needed, more drama. First Virgil decides to attack his tag team’s woman and now this. Speaking of which, he needed to make sure the check was ready when that heel decided to drag his sorry ass in to get his money.

He raked his fingers through his already disheveled hair and huffed. What else could go wrong? Light taps rattled the frosted glass on the office door. About time. He bent over the desk to retrieve the folder containing the check and contract for Virgil.

“C’min,” Moses called.

The knob jangled and the hinges creaked. Perfume, a subtle blend of rose and citrus caressed his senses, tightened his groan and knotted his stomach. Definitely not Virgil. High heels clicked across the threshold, followed by the soft rustle of clothing.

No. This could not be happening to him tonight. She wasn’t supposed to be here. He closed his eyes and willed his body under control, but the sweet scent of her fragrance left him a little dizzy.

“Not now, Madisin.”

“I can’t believe you. Is this how you repay our friendship?” BJ hurled the jewelry at his feet. “You turn her into one of your conquests?”

Moses gritted his teeth, aware that movement in the gym had ceased.

“What the hell have you done to my sister?”

He glanced at the broken chain on the floor, then at BJ. “You’re way out of line.”

BJ sneered and swung a large fist at his face. Moses blocked the blow with his left forearm and tossed a right hook to the other man’s jaw. BJ stumbled backward and Sin screamed.

“Don’t ever put your put your hands on her like that again.” Moses stalked toward him.

BJ rushed him, catching him around the middle. Both men went down, grappling for a hold. Moses made it to his feet first, his forearm wrapped around BJ’s neck in a side chokehold.

“I don’t want to do this with you, man. We’ve been friends for too long to let some bull come between us like this.”

The other man grunted. “You shouldn’t have slept with my sister.”

“She makes her own decisions.” Moses dragged him toward the now vacant ring and tossed him beneath the bottom rope. He quickly climbed onto the lip of the ring, grabbed the top rope and vaulted over it. He barely managed to duck the clothesline waiting for him.

They fell into an elbow and collar lock. Each man had a hand behind the other’s neck and gripped an elbow. Moses broke the hold first, grasping BJ’s wrist and twisting it behind his back. The man howled. He shoved him to one corner of the ring.

Moses stared his opponent in the eyes. “I love your sister, from the moment I laid eyes on her.” Still holding BJ’s arm, Moses backpedaled, bringing the other man with him and whipped forward, shoving him hard to aid his forward momentum.

At the last minute BJ turned, his back hitting the opposite corner, where he snapped off the ropes. Moses met him with a scoop slam. He bent at the knees, hooked one arm between the legs, held him over his head for two heartbeats, before releasing him and stepping away.

Thwack! The slam of a heavy body on a mildly soft surface reverberated through the room. Panting, BJ crawled to the ropes and hung out the side.

Moses tracked him across the ring. If BJ could come in here and try to dress him down in front of everyone, then he could take this ass whupping. He palmed his head. BJ tossed an elbow in his gut, driving him backward a few steps, then jumped to his feet.

He grabbed BJ’s shirt, ripping the sleeve. Moses spun behind the man, bent his knees and held BJ around the waist, back to chest. Moses bounced, lifting BJ to his shoulder, and fell backward.

“Means to an end” #MFRWhooks

Huemac, a half-breed, covets ultimate power, but he needs two things—access to the royal family and an ancient artifact. He attains the former by seducing the Emperor’s sister, and then steals the latter.

Moctezuma, the newly crowned Emperor, comes from a long line of powerful gods known as Sin-Eaters. He desires peace among his people, but an ancient prophecy warns of war.

Huemac discovers the incantation to activate the fabled Athame of Souls, a mythical weapon capable of entrapping souls. His quest to rule is within his grasp. Only one thing stands in his way—Moctezuma.

“I understand that my sister has requested you as part of her personal guard,” Moctezuma began offhandedly. “This is a much-coveted position.”

Huemac pretended not to see the dark glare Metztli shot Moctezuma. “Indeed, Lord Emperor. It is a testament of the trust and faith the princess has in me.” He allowed pride and arrogance to flow through his voice.

Moctezuma merely smiled. “Please do not stand on formality, old friend. I am rather pleased Metztli has requested you.”

Huemac coughed in surprise. He made the mistake of glancing directly into Moctezuma’s eyes and once more experienced the sensation of falling. With great effort he looked away. Had the emperor seen anything?

Moctezuma frowned, then rubbed his temples. “I will be speaking with Tialoc about the reassignment once he returns.”

Hope that had nothing to do with his own plot soared through Huemac. Once more he wondered if he were merely using Metztli as a means to an end of if he truly had feelings for her. “And when will that be?”

Moctezuma stared at a point beyond Metztli’s shoulder. “Three days’ time. In the meantime I have spoken with Xochiti to lighten your duties so that the two of you may be permitted some time here and there.”

Joy burst through Huemac. He shook himself. What was the matter with him? He was behaving like some lovestruck halfling.

“Oh that is marvelous!” Metztli beamed. “We can picnic in the valley of the Emperors. You have promised to show me the tombs of the Fallen.”

Huemac inclined his head, unable to stop the smile of indulgence from curling his lips. “Indeed I did. As soon as I know when I can leave, we will begin our adventure.” And maybe I’ll find the incantation to free my soul.
