Prologue

“Oh my gosh! She’s bleeding. She’s bleeding!” Jason Michaels yelled. He pressed his hand to the wound. “Hang in there, GG.”
This was supposed to be a fun double date, not a scene from the movie Purge. Smoke drifted through the space they were in, and he coughed, turning his head into his shoulder.
“The fire is out,” Samson “Stx” Denver announced between coughing spasms.
Jason sighed in relief. One issue down; now they had to get out of the building without getting shot.
More coughing drew his attention to his right. “The doors are blocked from the outside,” August “Sol” River told them. “And the last window we tried is too small for any of us to fit through.”
A boom rattled the air and instinctively Jason ducked, even though he was already on the floor. “What was that?”
“Fireworks?” August ventured.
“Not fireworks,” Stx said. He coughed. “Is GG conscious?”
Jason lightly ran a hand over GG’s face. Her eyes were closed, but she was breathing.
“She’s unconscious. And there’s a bump on her head.”
“I still smell something burning.” August couldn’t quite keep the fear out of her voice.
“We’re okay for now,” Stx told her.
“Who has a phone? At least we can call for help.”

They sat in a back booth with the baby in the corner next to Dexter. From the moment they sat down, Molly had managed to keep Dexter talking about his life, and he’d managed to keep her laughing.

“I can’t believe how much we have in common.” She dabbed at her eyes with her napkin. “It’s like we’re soul mates.”

He grudgingly had to agree with her. “You are so down-to-earth.”

Reaching over, she snagged a tortilla chip and scooped up a generous portion of the homemade spicy salsa. “You expected me to be more prissy?”

He’d gone this far, might as well finish eating his shoe. “Yeah, actually. Be careful, that salsa’s really hot.”

She coughed and sputtered. Tears streamed down her cheeks while she fanned her mouth. “Hot is not the word for it.”

“Try this.” He offered her a section of lime, then pushed her glass of water toward her. “I tried to warn you.”

She sipped her water. After a moment she sat back, a wide grin on her face. “I like spicy.” She reached for another chip.

Amusement curved his lips when she went through the same antics again, this time without the coughing. As long as the heat made her happy. On impulse, he placed his hand over hers, again surprised at the softness of her skin. With his thumb he drew lazy circles on the back of her hand. “I like you, Molly. I really do.”

“I like your style,” Samson said.
“You don’t even know me,” she scoffed.
There was that laugh again. Slow, sensual, and teasing. She knew that laugh. Knew the voice. No, it couldn’t be. She stepped back, but the man followed. The way he stood in her personal bubble spoke of familiarity. His clean, crisp scent and the slow slide of his fingers on her forearm brought back memories long forgotten. Memories of a stolen kiss between classes. Sharing an ice cream cone beneath the bleachers. The first time she gave herself to him. She slammed the lid on that memory and stepped away from his gentle caress.
“Samson?” she whispered, unable to speak any louder.
“And here I thought you’d totally forgotten me.”
She closed her eyes as his warm breath tickled her ear. She had never forgotten her first. Samson was a lot of firsts for her. The most significant being the first boy she ever had sex with. Desire and need sizzled through her system. Could what they did so long ago be called sex? She didn’t think so. They’d been stupid kids, and she’d pledged her heart to him. What had she known about love at 16?
“I never forgot you.”
He pressed closer, his body warm, hard, and strong against her softer one. “Do you remember the first time I saw you? You were singing then too.”
