Valentine’s is always a busy time of year for PB and J Bakery.

With love fueling the need for sweet confections, there’s always room for romance. Even the anonymous gifts left for Penelope, by a secret admirer, are a welcome distraction from the chaos of chocolate and spongecake.

Penelope Bishop has an idea who’s sending the gifts, or at least she hopes it’s her sexy mystery man who stole a kiss on New Year’s Eve. The trouble is, she’s never seen him. Her only clues are dancing skills, a great pair of lips, and a sensual voice that haunts her dreams and every waking fantasy. All that pales when her assistant, Avery, inspires those same lustful thoughts.

Avery has loved Penelope from afar, but with her recent breakup, he doubts she’ll view him beyond the current role he has in her life...seeing eye person. He has one chance to woo a woman who defines her world through touch, scent, sound, and taste--think outside the dating box. She swallowed. “You saw everything?”

He lifted her hand and placed her palm on his cheek. His head bobbed up and down, but there was more. His jaw was tight, and a corner of his mouth drooped. Is he upset on her behalf? The thought pricked her feminine pride, but at the same time, he had witnessed her humiliation.

She lowered her head.

“No, don’t do that. Keep your head up.” He placed a hand at her waist. “Besides, both of them stood there mortified at your declaration. The woman even slapped him and ran off through the crowd. He didn’t look too pleased at the turn of events.”

Excitement buzzed around them, and cheers rose. The crowd began counting down.

“He is absolutely not worth your time, and he didn’t appreciate you.”

A tear slipped beneath her lashes.

“I want you to know one thing, Penelope.”

“Not fair. I don’t even know your name.”

He hooked an arm around her waist and drew her against his solid frame. “All you need to know is this.” And as the crowd screamed “one” his mouth met hers.

She stood frozen, lost in a kiss that melted her soul, stirred her desire, and mended her heart. He coaxed her lips apart, his tongue darting along the seam. She curled her fingers in the lapels of his jacket as she opened for him, their tongues dueled for supremacy until she finally submitted.

Time stood still, the chorus of voices singing Auld Lang Syne faded as he cinched her tighter. His mouth never stopped moving on hers, becoming the very air she breathed. To stay in this stranger’s embrace would be just what she needed, but a dance and a kiss did not make a relationship. Still, she wanted the passion and acceptance he offered.

Gareth Bedford, a well-built black man and his lover, stepped close to the woman and leaned in. As the man wrapped an arm around her shoulders, a stab of jealousy sliced through his gut. Victor had no right to feel that callous emotion, since he was the source of her pain. Yet…it persisted.

“It’s very simple, Victor.” The speaker lifted sunglasses and glared through brown eyes. “She’s blind; she’s grieving. By the time she discovers what happened, things will have progressed too far for her to prevent anything. And if she does find out,” Long, thin fingers flicked lint from Victor’s shoulder, a cold smile creasing equally thin lips, making Victor flinch, “I will know exactly who to blame. Understand? She’ll marry Gareth Bedford in three or four months, and no one will be the wiser. And no one will know your secret either.”

Slowly, Victor nodded. He glanced back at the man and the grieving woman, just as she crumpled to the ground. The man lifted her in his arms and cradled her close. The gangly teen hurried forward. The man shook his head, then nodded toward a line of cars. The youth took off in that direction.

A fresh surge of guilt swamped Victor. There was no way he could keep this from them, but the next words chilled his blood.

“Of course.” They watched the couple as well; Gareth was carrying Amelia to a waiting limo. “If she ever learns the truth, before the culmination of my plans, you will know what it’s like to grieve for your lover.” Returning glasses to face the speaker spun on snazzy heels. “And her death will be on your conscience too.”

If memory served her right, there was a patch of grass about twenty yards to her left. “Left,” she prompted the dog. At once, the animal did as commanded. After a few paces, they stopped. Amelia felt forward with her foot and discovered they were at a curb. “Good girl. Forward, I have it now.”

They crossed the expanse of asphalt without incident. Small pebbles crunched beneath her shoes before they were muffled by grass. She stopped, then removed the harness by pushing in the hinge clip. She pulled the apparatus off and looped it over her shoulder. She readied a poop bag just in case and gave the command, “busy, busy,” for the dog to relieve herself.

“All right, girl.” Amelia followed a few steps as Kiska sniffed and turned. A moment later, a soft hiss filled the night. Amelia shoved the unused bag in her pocket, then re-harnessed the dog. “All right, girl, let’s go back.”

Tires screeched in the distance. Amelia walked until her shoes touched the edge of grass and the beginning of asphalt. She listened for a moment. Still no traffic on this edge of the parking lot.

“Find the curb,” Amelia said. Kiska moved and Amelia stepped forward.

An engine raced. Someone screamed a warning as Kiska stopped, then dragged her backward.

Amelia lost her balance, trying to compensate for the sudden change in direction. Air sped past her, and something clipped her hip, aiding her fall. She hit the ground hard, sprawled into a heap.

Kiska danced next to her, nudging her face, emitting a soft whine.

Footsteps pounded on the pavement. She reached a shaky hand to calm her dog.

“It’s okay, girl. You did good. You saved my life.” She hugged the dog and allowed the animal to lick her face.

“Are you alright?” Voices moved around her. “That car tried to run you over.”
