Nathalie blew out a shaky breath. Some of the tension left her body. “Okay. She stared at her hands. “You know, they’re the ones who found me,” she began softly. “I wouldn’t be alive today if not for Carson and Matt.”

Sterling shifted to the chair beside hers.

“I fought as hard as I could, and it still wasn’t enough.” She stared at the vacant leather chair. “There are still things I can’t do. You know how some people can just pig out at a buffet? I can’t do that or I’ll get sick. I don’t think I’ve had a steak or poultry in years.” She managed a self-deprecating smile. “Every now and then I’ll try a small piece of steak, but it stays on my stomach.”

“You are strong and you have overcome many obstacles to be where you are today,” Sterling praised. “You have the love and devotion of not one, but two very eligible men. You know how very proud of you I am.”

A soft smile creased her lips. “Thank you,” she

He stood. “You call me”—he held her gaze—“anytime. Anywhere.”

Nodding, she stood. “I better get back to  work or they really will know something is up.” She strode across the room . Her hand was on the knob before she stopped and looked over her shoulder. “ Have you noticed anything strange with the computers?”

He furrowed his brow. “Strange how?” He settled behind his desk again.

She opened the door. “Random letters and numbers.”

He shook his head. “Can’t say I have.” He glanced at a planner on his desk. “We’re due to upgrade the hardware in a couple of months. Carson updated the servers last week, and I made sure the weekly updates were done last night.”

She nodded. “Thanks, Sterling. Now I need to type up my report, since my computer is on the fritz.” She made sure her voice carried to the other office.

“User error,” came the pithy retort.

Sterling chuckled and she smiled.

“Remember that tonight when we’re at the party,” she warned, walking toward Carson’s open door. She leaned on the jamb. Matt sat on a corner of the desk, while Carson typed away.

“Reboot your terminal,” Carson said without looking up.

Take away dinner?

One of my favorite things growing up was pizza night. Every other night of the week was filled with home-cooked meals, but Friday or Saturday was Pizza Night! Pizza was probably the best choice there was for take-out or maybe KFC, but now any cuisine is fair game.

Pizza is still one of my favorites, but how about Chinese? As an adult sweet and sour chicken with shrimp fried rice nudged out the weekly pizza nights. Leftover pizza and Chinese morphed into soul food.

Why cook soul food when you could get it from Big Mama’s down the road? Now with nifty apps like DoorDash, Grubhub, UberEats and BiteSquad, take out is literally at your fingertips. Gotta a hankering for doughnuts and frappes? It could be at your door in as little as 15 minutes. A sandwich from Jimmy Johns? Oh look, there already here. XD Or maybe you want a sophisticated meal. Well you can get that too.

Nowadays, cooking is a treat and take out is the norm. I’m gonna order the club from Jersey Mike’s and wait for it to come to me. 🙂

Sara loved the ease of being with Jake.

She held his arm, strolling down the snow-covered sidewalks after dinner. A few flakes fluttered to the ground and the crisp wind danced them across the slippery maroon bricks in the street. Dense green garlands wound around black wrought iron lamp posts. Bright emerald wreaths with big red velvet bows hung on buildings or in windows. Blinking multi-colored lights vied with streetlights and traffic. The city was dressed for Christmas.

When Sara sighed, Jake glanced at her. “You okay?”

“When is the last time you walked downtown Flint without being afraid?”

“Good question. Downtown Development Authority has increased its patrols.”

“They have. Downtown is probably the only place in the city that’s safe.”

He chuckled. “Right, right.”

Sara stumbled, instinctively reaching for Jake. He caught her arm and dragged her against his strong lean frame. She peered into his eyes, their faces inches apart. Her heart hammered at his nearness. “You have this incredible knack for coming to my rescue.”

“I never could resist a damsel in distress.”

“My hero.”

“You can’t look at me that way when you say things like that.”

She moved her hands to the front of his coat. “Why not?”

He brought his lips to hers, giving her the only answer she needed.
