Excerpt
“You let her stand out here too long,” Carson admonished.
Matt smirked as he slowly released his love. “I took her to the car.”
“She’s not even supposed to be out of bed,” he groused, heading down the slight rise.
“And if we hadn’t brought her along, she’d have found her own way here,” he pointed out.
“No, she wouldn’t have.” The declaration held a note of finality.
“Right. You can be the one to spend the next few weeks sleeping with one eye open.”
They arrived at the metallic gray SUV. Nathalie started to open the door. Carson placed a hand on the glass to prevent this. She quirked an eyebrow and he frowned. With a nod, she faced forward again, but not before a tear trickled down her cheek.
With a sigh, he jerked open the door. He kissed the tear away, before caressing her lips with his. She placed a hand on his cold cheek.. He kissed the inside of her wrist where a rough scar ringed the skin there. He placed her hand in her lap before closing the door.
Matt swept a hand down Carson’s back as he rounded the rear of the SUV to the other side.
Carson climbed in the seat behind her. Matt slid in next to him.
“Where to?” Sterling half turned in his seat.
“Home.”
Sterling put the idling engine in drive. “Not to alarm the three of you on this somber occasion, but I think we were being watched.”
Carson stared out the floor to ceiling windows of the family room. Behind him a fire crackled in the large stone hearth. In front of him brownish-green patches of grass showed beneath layers of snow now spotty from the earlier sun. A mug of Earl Grey sat at his elbow, untouched and lukewarm. He felt like the scene before him, cold, frozen with patches of dying life peeking through. Absently, he rubbed a scar on the inside of his forearm. The skin was discolored. A few dark marks almost like burns marred the area. And well, it had. The antibiotics used to fight meningitis had burned but saved his life. Saved his life so he could mourn Sam.
And he would mourn Sam. A man who knew, just knew how to relieve him of his worries and cares without saying a word. He’d loved Sam. Oh, not in the same way he loved Matt or Nathalie, but deeper…stronger. Sam was the one he wasn’t obligated to care for, or protect. If anything Sam had provided those things to him. He couldn’t call Sam his lover, as they weren’t often sexual, nor was he just a friend. Emotions went deeper than friendship but, he had been a partner. As much as Nathalie or Matt. Whatever the label, Sam was and had been family.
Yes. Sam had been family.
Slow, simmering anger bubbled up as he thought of how Sam’s death could’ve been prevented.
